<title>We’ve got to address the problem with debt in this country. The government has to stop running itself on a credit card and Americans need to get out of debt. And the exorbitant interest rates that are charged on these credit cards, I’d love to address because there comes a point where you got to say, at what point does it become loan sharking and the other part a fair and equitable reasonable amount of money to expect a return on the borrowed money, so anything we can do to help people get out of debt in this country should be a priority. </title>

<title>Well I would think that as long as you are on a public sidewalk that you can do that, just as if someone was striking and they march around with a sign and keep moving. There are certain rules that you can’t just sit in front and block the doorway. But if you are moving and not obstructing anything in that regards. And you have a sign in front of you, as long as you are moving that is freedom of speech and I would think he has a right to do that.”

Reporter: You think there might be a better way to get his money back?

Meeks: Yeah, if the employer owes him money take him to court. It seems that $610, I’d take him to small claims court and have it adjudicated, and if the judge sees it his way, get his money back.

Reporter: And it’s New York, so why not judge Judy?

Meeks: Well he can do that to (laughter) </title>

<title>Nutrition education we already do within health classes. When my kids were in kindergarten or 1st Grade, and how many grains and how many dairies, so nutrition education, yes. One of the other questions to be asked is, is it the federal government’s role to tell schools what they should be doing within the choices that are available within a school. We need to keep in mind that within the past 40 some-odd years, we’ve been doing that within the school lunch program. We have set the standards within school lunches and we say there are standards that need to be met. What we haven’t really done is updated those standards. It’s not just what is available within the school lunch program. It’s also what is available for sale through other programs. </title>

<title>Well first of all, it’s not up the federal government to mandate what schools teach. I would never want to intrude on the local jurisdiction of schools to decide who they hire, who the fire, what books use. That’s not the role of the federal government. But I do think the role of the federal government is, as long as we’re providing school lunches and school breakfasts and food in schools, that we ought to be able to say what foods would be allowed in those schools. If you’re gonna partake in the school lunch or school breakfast program, then you oughta be able to set guidelines for all of the foods in those schools. And that’s what I’m trying get accomplished. </title>

<title>When I was in the House, I was on the financial services committee. And the answer to your question is yes, and we’re working on that legislation. Right now because of the collapse of the middle class and the increase of poverty, you’re finding large numbers of American families who when they go to the grocery story, are buying groceries on a credit card. And despite the fact they are paying their bills every single month, the credit card companies are charging them 25, 28 percent interest rate. That is absolutely outrageous and a rip-off that cannot be tolerated. Yes, as a United States senator I am prepared to introduce legislation. </title>
