Given the fact that in the Spring (& now Winter) Primaries and Caucuses is the ONLY time we get have a say in who we want for US President (the General election in November is to vote for the Electoral College, not the candidate), When do you think the American Voters will Finally get to Vote for a U.S President? Obama made a speech in June. His statements I would like further explained. He talks about 10 of billions in cuts in wasteful spending. Where are those cuts coming from? Second he states he will cut investments in unproven missle defense systems. Third he states he will NOT weaponize space. Is Obama against NASA projects? Further explain these cuts More

What can you do to make sure that I have the same privilege as Governor Palin in offering her teenage daughter the opportunity to make her own decision regarding her pregnancy? It seems that Palin wants to keep this personal decision within her own family, yet wants to change the laws to take away my opportunity to do the same. More

Why can sitting senators virtually abandon their "day jobs" to run for President for more than a year? I assume they're getting paid normal salaries during this time. Why aren't you responsible for being in your office, or being on the Senate floor for debates or votes. Where is the obligation to represent your constituents? More

How would you encourage peers to be honest and admit they know nothing about a subject they're being asked about beyond rehearsed lines crafted to feign awareness, appease the most amount of voters and stave criticism?
Asked by: michael perigard from Seattle, WA. Received 10 Votes.
Listen to: U.S. Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO)
Well that’s one of those questions “whether have you stopped beating your wife yet?” type of questions. I think most people that I serve with in Congress are fairly straightforward and try to answer things as honestly and straightforward way as they can. Obviously, people have their own political opinions and biases that shapes the kinds of answers that they give. You know there are all kinds of people in the world. Some of them that really want to be smartest – just kills them to say “I don’t know” and there are other ones like me who were never good in school.

Our committee has three goals and this is what we have been trying to accomplish: protecting taxpayer’s dollars from waste, fraud and abuse and making sure government works for the people third holding the government of this country accountable for their actions that’s what we have been trying to do in 2007 and 2008 during the time I have been chairman of that committee.

Why do you think Americans and your constituents prefer our two party system over a legislature with multiple parties as in many other nations around the world? Why did or didn't you declare yourself as an independent?
Asked by: michael perigard from Seattle, WA. Received 19 Votes.
Listen to: U.S. Rep. Rob Bishop (R-UT)
The two party system is a bi-product of the system we have right now, the fact that we have single member districts where one person is elected will always result in a two party system, it does in other countries as well. The constitution was designed with no parties in mind and can function with one, or two or multi or no parties whatsoever, as long as you have separation of powers and federalism securely in place. We are mucking around with federalism and separation of powers to the point that it doesn’t help.

Well, the current law does allow sitting Senators to run for another political office- namely President. In my state, in many instances if you decide to run for another office you have to quit your current office. So Congress could change the law, I presume, to allow that. We’d have to have some constitutional scholars tell us if whether constitutionally that’s enforceable or not.

why aren't the costs of militarily defending our oil interests in the persion gulf included in determining the u.s. cost of a barrel of oil?
Asked by: Gerald Wagner from Dayton, OH. Received 17 Votes.
Listen to: U.S. Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV)
It’s obvious that the war in Iraq has made things more difficult because of turmoil in the Middle East, and just the amount of oil the war is using. There’s a number of things that have caused the price of oil to go up. We believe, and that’s part of our package, we need to do something to rein in the speculation, we believe there’s a lot of speculation. Some economists say the percentage is pretty high, just the speculative part of this.

Every university has created online schools for profit, at around 40 to 70 million dollars-less than .0008% that we now spend. True democracy offers opportunities for all! Why have we not created a free online university for all Americans?
Asked by: Russell Spears from Montclair, NJ. Received 57 Votes.
Listen to: U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH)
Rep. Kucinich: Well, you know, online education keeps growing, and for some people it’s a more affordable option. What we need to do is to make that those people who want to go to an institution and appear in person would be able to afford it. That’s where our focus should be. We should not take our eye away from our obligation to give people a chance to go to college.

When will the federal government begin to get honest with the American people about the issue of peak oil?
Asked by: goat from Brooklyn, NY. Received 33 Votes.
Listen to: U.S. Rep. Lee Terry (R-NE)
The discussion about whether we hit peak oil I think drives some of the discussion about whether or how quickly we move away from oil as the major use of our energy. It’s kind of like global warming was a few years ago. People talk about peak oil, but there’s no evidence that we’ve hit peak oil, some people think it’s right now. So it’s part of their discussions.

In the eighteen years since the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed, fewer than 20-40% of the businesses in our local communities have removed the barriers to access and inclusion. If you are elected, what will you do to influence and advance the civil right of access and inclusion for every American with a disability?
Asked by: L Williams from Glendora, CA. Received 7 Votes.
Listen to: U.S. Rep. Joe Baca (D-CA)
Baca: Whatever we can do it terms of the legislator, we must begin to communicate and enforce the kinds of laws that are there. And it’s done through city ordinance at the local level or county depending whether it’s a city or a county, incorporated areas to make sure people have access. And that’s why it’s important that we deal with the Disability Act and I support it. Cause, what if it was me or what if it was you that couldn’t get there and we wanted information and we wanted to have access and we wanted to participate.
