I don’t know the answer to that. I was not in Congress at the time that that happened and I don’t know that anybody did. I don’t know how to answer that question.

  • Question:

Recently you revealed that you intentionally avoid classified meetings, as a matter of choice. How do you justify this to your constituents who rely on you for representation, when it comes to matters of national security and the war?

Asked by: Jason W. from Hyrum, UT. Received 10 Votes.
    Answer:

Listen to: U.S. Rep. Chris Cannon (R-UT)

Rep. Cannon: In the first place the problem with classified briefings is that you don’t learn anything. But then you’re stuck with stuff that you’ve heard that you don’t want to say out of context. So I read extensively and I’ve gone to classified briefings half a dozen times – that is, I’ve only skipped two or three of them frankly bc nothing is said there that’s really important. The really important things actually are available to the public if you look and read and so I educate myself extensively on these topics.

  • Question:

The Bush Administration apparently believes that 9/11 justifies violating our basic principles. If elected, will you work to abolish the Military Commissions Act, restore habeas corpus and end the practice of rendition?

Asked by: Patricia R. from Silver Spring, MD. Received 24 Votes.

    Answer:

Listen to: U.S. Rep. Bob Filner (D-CA)

Yes, in fact I have sponsored bills to do all this in the current Congress. I thought that the President for these infringements on our constitution should have been impeached. That is, it’s important for history and for precedent that these protections in our constitution be used and not just lie down because of political reasons. I think it would have been very educational for the country and very important for our future that we would have brought these constitutional infringements up. This President has run rough shod over it.

  • Question:

How important is passing an appropriations bill for the operation in Iraq?

Asked by: District L. from Washington, DC. Received 12 Votes.
Categories: Defense · Foreign Policy · Regulation · Taxes · Terrorism. Tags: bill · iraq · legislation.
    Answer:

Listen to: U.S. Sen. John W. Warner (R-VA)

We desperately need to get funding to the military such that they don’t lose a step. Because they are succeeding in the goals laid down militarily, not politically, but that’s not their responsibility. – excuse me let me finish. So we don’t want them to lose a step, but clearly the future course of this operation in Iraq we have to revisit where the political structure is or is not.

  • Question:

Why is the gun lobby so powerful in this country?

Asked by: Career J. from Washington, DC. Received 15 Votes.
Categories: Defense · Homeland Security · Terrorism. Tags: gun lobby · lobby · NRA.
    Answer:

Listen to: U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA)

I think most, a lot of elected officials are just simply afraid of the gun lobby. They've tried it before and nothing ever happens. I think they've given up. They've given up that we're ever going to have any meaningful firearms control at all in our country. They've just given up on it.

  • Question:

Are we doing enough to look after new immigrants to this country?

Asked by: Patrick H. from Washington, DC. Received 10 Votes.
    Answer:

Listen to: U.S. Rep. Tom Tancredo (R-CO)

We are not assimilating people who are coming here- even legal aliens- they are not assimilating into the culture, certainly illegals. We are not encouraging assimilation. We are dividing ourselves up. We are becoming a linguistic, a political, a cultural Tower of Babel.

  • Question:

Do you think it is important to have to have a warrant before carrying out a wiretap?

Asked by: DC P. from Washington, DC. Received 1 Vote.
    Answer:

Listen to: U.S. Rep. Ciro Rodriguez (D-TX)

“Of course it is. And we all know that and we have always . . . So if you have good reason that shouldn’t be any problem. And the courts are ready to move as quickly as possible, and we even allow them, in cases of emergencies, for them to go ahead and do it and come to the courts later, but they still have to come to the courts. The way we have been operating hasn’t been a rule of law, and the administration wants to continue to do that and that’s not what America is all about.”
