  • Question:

More than 21 million toys made in China have been recalled this year. Should the head of the Consumer Product Safety Commission resign?

Asked by: DCPundit from Washington, DC. Received 33 Votes.
    Answer:

Listen to: U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)

“I came from the kitchen to the Congress. I came as a Mom wanting to make sure that public policy did whatever it could do that parents couldn’t do to protect its children and the trust that parents across the country would like to have in the federal government is completely unjustified when we see how lax the Consumer Product Safety Commission has been with its acting chairperson saying we don’t need any more resources and we don’t need any more authority.”

  • Question:

Congress is charged with oversight of the Executive Branch. How does the Bush Administration compare with other administrations when it comes to providing information to Congress?

Asked by: DCPundit from Washington, DC. Received 1 Vote.

    Answer:

Listen to: U.S. Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA)

I think the Bush Administration has been more secretive than any administration in history – even more than the Nixon Administration. They set up road blocks even before September eleventh 2001 to try to keep their operations away from the Congress and the American people, which I think is a serious mistake.

  • Question:

Do you think it is important to have to have a warrant before carrying out a wiretap?

Asked by: DCPundit from Washington, DC. Received 1 Vote.
    Answer:

Listen to: U.S. Rep. Ciro Rodriguez (D-TX)

“Of course it is. And we all know that and we have always . . . So if you have good reason that shouldn’t be any problem. And the courts are ready to move as quickly as possible, and we even allow them, in cases of emergencies, for them to go ahead and do it and come to the courts later, but they still have to come to the courts. The way we have been operating hasn’t been a rule of law, and the administration wants to continue to do that and that’s not what America is all about.”

  • Question:

Would you work with the White House to find a compromise on funding Children’s Health Insurance?

Asked by: DCPundit from Washington, DC. Received 2 Votes.

    Answer:

Listen to: U.S. Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)

“Well, I haven’t had any overture from the White House on what they might consider an appropriate next step. What I do know is that in the House we compromised from a $90 billion dollar bill to a $35 billion dollar bill in order to have bipartisanship and to have it pass the United States Senate.”

During the Reagan Administration this agency had as many as 1,000 employees. Now they are down to a little more than 100. It's no wonder they cannot test every toy. Perhaps Congress should think of giving regulators of our toys - and food - some more teeth!

Now that the Bush Administration has set a precedent for secrecy, how can Congress prevent the next administration - Democrat or Republican - from taking advantage of that precedent for its own aims. Power does corrupt, absolutely, right? Will Henry Waxman be as tough on an Obama or Clinton administration?
